Marriage Licenses Information

MARRIAGE LICENSE INFORMATION IN THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT

The Town Clerk’s Office is also the Registrar of Vital Statistics Office in the Town of Pomfret.  You would apply here to obtain a marriage license if you are getting married in the Town of Pomfret.  This is where all the original marriage licenses/records for those married in Pomfret are filed.  Certified copies from other towns in the State of Connecticut for persons that were living in Pomfret at the time they were married would also be on file in the Pomfret Town Clerk’s Office.

To apply for a marriage certificate:

  • Read the Marriage Licenses Laws of Connecticut
  • Fill out the attached marriage license worksheet and be sure to include:
    • Groom’s information on the left side of the worksheet and bride on the right
    • Your full names including your full middle name
    • Your resident address(s) (not your mailing address)
    • Provide the city/town and state or foreign country for your place of birth
    • Your father’s full first, middle (if known) and last names
    • Your mother’s full first, middle (if known) and maiden names 
    • Provide the state or foreign country, and if at all possible the town/city, for your parent’s birth places
    • Provide the name, address and phone number of your officiator (person performing your marriage ceremony)
    • A contact phone number for one or both of you
    • Date of the marriage, if known, on the top or bottom of the worksheet
    • Please, print neatly!  Your marriage license will be typed from the information on the worksheet
  • The marriage application fee is $50.00
  • The marriage license is good for 65 days from the date of application
  •  Calling for an appointment is preferred though you may apply any time during our regular hours:  Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Wednesday 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; closed Fridays.  Calling ahead to check that either the Town Clerk or Assistant Town Clerk will be in the office before coming in to apply is recommended.
  • The officiator will complete his/her section and return the license to our office
  • The fee for each certified copy of your marriage certificate is $20.00 (you may request and pay for certified copies at the time you apply)

To request a Certified Copy of a Marriage Certificate/Record:

You may request a certified copy of a marriage certificate/record filed in the Pomfret Town Clerk’s Office.  The fee is $20.00 per certified copy.  Per C.G.S. 7-51A, only the bride, groom or spouse listed in the marriage certificate shall be issued a certified copy containing the social security number(s) of the bride, groom or spouse (or others authorized by the Department of Public Health).

Fill out the attached Request for a Certified Copy of a Marriage Certificate/Record form completely.  Submit the completed form with a check, Postal Money Order, bank cashier’s check or bank money order for the appropriate amount, a self-addressed stamped envelope, and mail to:  Town Clerk’s Office, Town of Pomfret, Five Haven Road, Pomfret Center, CT  06259
