What if I no longer live in Pomfret, but still live in Connecticut and I receive a motor vehicle tax bill from Pomfret?

You pay the July motor vehicle tax bill to the town you residided in on October 1st of the previous year. We do not pro-rate between towns; if you no longer live in Pomfret when you receive a motor vehicle tax bill, but did live in Pomfret as of the previous October 1st, you must pay Pomfret for your motor vehicle. The following July you will begin to owe motor vehicle tax in your new town.

If you did not live in Pomfret the prior October 1st, you will need to provide proof that you were living in another town on October 1st in order for our office to transfer the bill to the correct town.

If you have moved and did not change your address with the DMV, please do so as soon as possible.  The DMV sends your motor vehicle listing to the town that is on the address of your registration as of October 1st.  If the address is wrong, it will go to the wrong town and have to be transferred. The DMV now allows residents to change their address online.
